Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

A collection of business files, reports, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, recorded media, and newspaper clippings related to Walter O'Malley and the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers.

Series I includes correspondence, agreements, reports, and articles relating to the business of a professional baseball organization, primarily the Brooklyn Dodgers. This includes the management of teams, staff, Ebbets Field, and associated businesses, sponsors, government, and fans. There are files relating to the Japan Goodwill Tours, files relating to the Dodgers' aircrafts, from the Convair 440 to the Electra Kay-O, and files with team innovations and industry firsts as they relate to fans, players, media, and employees.

Series II relates primarily to the move from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. There are files on the effort on behalf of Walter O’Malley to privately build a new stadium in Brooklyn. The issues and challenges of Chavez Ravine and the construction of Dodger Stadium. Correspondence relating to Proposition B, the Los Angeles taxpayers’ Yes or No vote to approve the existing city of Los Angeles contract with the Dodgers.

Series III includes correspondence, agreements, articles, and ephemera related to the Dodgertown spring training facility in Vero Beach, Florida. This includes the establishment of Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida, reports from select years of spring training, activities at Dodgertown, uses of the Dodgertown facility outside of baseball, and the Dodgers' departure from Vero Beach, FL.

Series IV are photographs of individuals, spring training, opening day,tours to Japan, post-season, Dodger airplanes, and Walter O'Malley personal photographs.

Series V - Record Media includes interviews, pre-game talks, and team highlights.

Series VI are materials relating to the more personal or private life of Walter O'Malley. Such things as his admission to the bar, family geneology, correspondence, appointment books, and stadium guests books.

Series VII are scrapbooks and one box of oversized manuscript items. There are three scrapbooks consisting of newspaper clippings and magazine photos. There are two photo albums relating to the tours to Japan, 1956 and 1966. One photo album when the Yomiuri Giants visited Dodgertown in 1961. A photo album created by photographer Barney Stein of spring training in 1950. These photos include Bear Mountain, Clearwater, Daytona Beach, Havana, Caracas, Dominican Republic, Vero Beach, and scenes at Ebbets Field.
