Series II. Old Judge cabinet cards, 1888-1889

 Series

Series Description

The materials within this series date from 1888 to 1889 and are arranged alphabetically by last name. They are further organized by the pose codes assigned by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson's The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890) and then, when applicable, by the British Cartophilic Society classification and card publication date. Of particular interest are the cards with the rare black and pink mounts.

Historical Note

In 1888 and 1889, "Old Judge" cigarette packs contained coupons that could be collected and redeemed for a cabinet card. With an ACC classification of N173, these were generally the same images that were used on the cigarette cards but there are at least thirty-five images unique to the cabinet cards. All images were affixed to a gilt-edged cardboard mount with rounded edges. Most of the mounts were yellow but there are also versions mounted on brown, black, pink, or red cards.
